blue boobyGalápagos islands 2009

In september 2009 we made a 14 day trip with Sawadee to the Galápagos islands. There was no dutch guide with this trip,
a local agent arranged transport to and from the airport.
First we stayed two nights in Quito. Then we flew to the Galápagos islands. Here we joined an international group on the Yacht Darwin. After a 8 day cruise we flew back to Quito for another two night stay.

Watch a short movie with highlights on the right.

If you have more time the entire trip in chronological order
can be seen below in 5 parts.

Or see all our pictures of this trip at our Multiply page. You can also read the entire travelstory.

Galápagos, part 1

This is the first part of the entire movie.
In this part we visit Las Bachas, South Plaza and Santa Fé.
Besides a lovely landscape we see iguanas, the land and marine species. South Plaza is also the only island where you can encounter the hybrid between the two species.
Ofcourse we also filmed crabs, sea lions, and many birds like
the lava gull, bluefooted booby, the masked booby and the swallow tailed gull.

Galápagos, part 2

In part 2 we visit the island Espagnola. At Espagnola we visit
two areas: Gardner Bay and Punta Suarez. After a wet landing
at Gardner Bay you can only visit the beach,
but that is certainly worth the effort. At the rocks we found
some beautiful marine iguanas.
At Punta Suarez one can walk a trail along breeding grounds of the bluefooted and masked boobies and also the albatros.

At Floreana we visit Post Office Bay where you can leave a postcard and after that Punta Cornmorant.
Next to flamingo's we saw some mating turtles here.

The day ended with snorkeling at Devils Crown.

Galápagos, part 3

In part 3 we visit Santa Cruz and Rabida islands.
In Puerto Ayora we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. Here you can see tortoises from every island. They also hatch eggs from wild tortoises to preserve the population.
A bus brings us to the highlands where we search for the wild giant tortoises.

Rabida is known for its red beach. The color comes from
the high iron content. At Rabida we see many sealions.

Galápagos, part 4

In part 4 scenes from our visit to Santiago, Punta Egas.
Where the marine iguanas eat the green weed from the rocks at the shoreline. This also the place to see furseals.

We sail along the odd shaped rocks at Buccaneers Cave.

And we visit St. Bartholome. At this island you can climb to the top of the vulcano and enjoy a great view.

Galápagos, part 5

The final part of the movie has pictures of Sombrero Chino, an island in the shape of a chinese hat.

And on the last day of our trip we visited North Seymour. Here are the breeding grounds of the fregat birds. The male is very striking with his red swollen throat.
